I walked down into the basin that contained the settlement, following the music.

My footsteps carried me first through the small cemetery, where perhaps one hundred miners, merchants, and members of their families were buried. Most of them died prosperous, judging from the elaborate tombstones. One grave was capped with the statute of a weeping angel that seemed to be the antithesis of the marble herald who had urged me down into this lost city.

The main street was preserved to a degree that was eerie. It was as if the residents had simply packed their bags and left the day the mine played out, leaving behind the town for whoever wanted to settle near the top of a mountain in the middle of a desert, hundreds of miles from civilization.
